The basemap from Mapbox is created entirely of lines.
By only displaying lines of cities, it gives you an better idea of block sizes and the density of the street scape.
For instance, comparing at the same zoom level, New York has an extremely organized grid system compared to the others, Tokyo seems to have more streets overall with somewhat organized grids, and Shanghai has a lot of white space - may be structures or open space -.
There are three zoom levels you can choose to view the map, click on the lines to show popups.
